History of Sugarloaf Mountain

  • Sugarloaf Mountain’s name dates back to the 16th century. It was inspired by the conical molds used by Portuguese traders to transport refined sugar loaves during Brazil’s sugarcane boom. The peak’s unique shape reminded early settlers of these sugar molds, hence the name.
  • Another theory suggests the name derives from the Tupi language, describing a “high, isolated, pointed hill,” but the sugar trade explanation is most widely accepted.
  • The mountain is also historically significant as the site near which the Portuguese founded the city of Rio de Janeiro in 1565.
  • Over the centuries, Sugarloaf has become a symbol of the city and Brazil, featured in countless artworks and photographs.

Getting to Sugarloaf Mountain

Construction of the Sugarloaf Mountain cable car

The Sugarloaf Cable Car (Bondinho do Pão de Açúcar) is a major attraction. It was inaugurated in 1912 as the first cable car in Brazil and the third in the world.

Brazilian engineer Augusto Ferreira Ramos, who began construction in 1908, was the visionary behind the cable car. The project involved around 400 workers, and all equipment was painstakingly carried up the steep hills.

The cable car system has been modernized several times, with major upgrades in 1972, 2008, and 2009 to improve capacity and safety

Today, the cable car carries up to 65 passengers per trip and operates every 20–30 minutes between the base, Morro da Urca, and the summit
