What to expect at the Sugarloaf Mountain entrance? A first-timer’s guide

Which entrance should you use at Sugarloaf Mountain?

For most visitors, the Praia Vermelha (Red Beach) entrance is the main gateway to Sugarloaf.

  • Shortest queues (most days): Praça General Tibúrcio (secondary gate)
  • Guided tours meet here: Praia Vermelha entrance
  • Wheelchair access: Praia Vermelha (step-free to cable cars)

How many entrances are there at Sugarloaf Mountain?

Sugarloaf Mountain has two public entrances. The main Praia Vermelha entrance (at Praça General Tibúrcio) is where most visitors start their journey via the lower cable car station. A secondary gate nearby handles overflow and sometimes offers shorter queues. Both connect to the iconic glass cable cars. Tickets are required at all entrances, and staff are on hand to direct you. We’ll help you pick the right one.

Accessible entrances at Sugarloaf Mountain

The Praia Vermelha entrance is the most accessible option. It has a step-free route into the cable car station, elevators for boarding, and staff assistance on request. Wheelchair users can ride both stages of the cable cars to Morro da Urca and Sugarloaf’s summit. Accessible restrooms are available at both levels. The Praça General Tibúrcio side gate is less suitable, as it involves uneven ground and no dedicated ramps.
